# Choose VAT for menu items

> Review the tax option and tax-inclusive price when creating or editing a menu item.

Select the VAT option for an item when you add it or change its details. Tapp shows the choices for your shop's operating market alongside the customer price.

## Who can do this?

**Owners and Managers** can change an item's tax choice. Staff stock updates do not change the item's VAT or price.

## Where to do it

In the web app, open **Menu** and select an item, or choose **Add item**. Find the price and VAT fields in the item editor.

## Review the tax choice

1. Check the shop selected in the shop picker.
2. Enter the price the customer should pay, including the applicable tax.
3. Open the VAT menu and read the descriptions of the available options.
4. Select the option appropriate for the item.
5. Check any separate price-list tax choice if you use one.
6. Save the item.
7. Reopen it to confirm the saved selection, particularly after importing a menu.

Do not assume that a preselected option is correct for every product. The item name and category do not determine which tax treatment you should choose. Use the business's tax information when making that decision.

## Imported and existing items

Review imported prices and tax choices against your intended menu. If an older item needs correcting, select the current option shown in the editor and save it. Moving an item to another category is a separate change; review its VAT explicitly if needed.

A price list can have its own tax choice. In the item editor, find the list and use its VAT selector beside the price. You can leave its price blank to use the standard price while selecting a separate VAT option. The first VAT option follows the item’s own rate; it is shown as a percentage. Select that first option to remove a separate VAT choice, then save and reopen the item to check it.

Changing or clearing a list price directly in the menu table also removes its separate VAT choice. Use the item editor when you need to keep a separate VAT option, and review price and VAT together after saving.

## Platform notes

The saved choice is used for the item's ordering and receipt information. A Fast Charge has its own tax selection when it is created. Editing a menu item does not replace reviewing a separate Fast Charge.

## Market notes

Great Britain and Germany have different available choices. Confirm the shop before selecting an option. Ask your tax adviser if you are unsure which treatment applies to your product; this guide explains the controls, not how to classify a sale.

## Troubleshooting

Wait if the VAT options are still loading. If no valid option appears, check the shop and retry. Contact Tapp support if the selector remains unavailable rather than entering an unrelated option just to save. Price-list VAT choices show only percentages, so different choices can look identical. If you cannot distinguish the option you need, ask Tapp support before changing it.
