# Set up cash drawers

> Create a drawer, count its opening float and turn on cash tracking so cash payments record every note and coin.

With cash tracking on, cash payments and refunds record the notes and coins taken in and handed out in a named drawer.

## Who can do this?

**Owners and Managers** can create, open and delete drawers and turn cash tracking on or off. **Staff** can see the drawers and use an open drawer for cash payments, but cannot open a drawer or change these settings.

## Where to do it

In the web app, open **Settings** and choose **Cash drawers**, or select **Cash drawers** at the top of **Point of sale**.

In the mobile app, open the **Sell** tab and choose the **Cash drawers** quick action.

Tracking applies to every device in the shop.

## Steps

1. Select **New drawer**, enter a name your team knows, such as Front counter or Bar, and select **Create drawer**. A new drawer starts empty and closed.
2. Choose the drawer from the **Cash drawer** list in the web app, or under **Choose the drawer you are using** in the mobile app. Your choice is remembered.
3. In the web app, select **Open drawer**; the mobile app shows the count form straight away. Under **Count your opening float** (mobile: **Opening count**), enter how many of each note and coin are physically in the drawer.
4. Tick **I have counted and checked these notes and coins.**, then select **Open with** and the total (mobile: **Confirm opening count**). The drawer now shows **Open**.
5. Turn tracking on. In the web app, select **Settings** on the Cash drawers page, then **Enable tracking** and **Done**. In the mobile app, tap **Tracking: off** and confirm with **Enable tracking**.

The **Settings** dialog now shows **Cash tracking enabled**. Cash payments and refunds now go through a drawer; see [Take cash with a drawer](/en/point-of-sale/take-cash-with-a-drawer.md).

## Let Staff move cash to the safe at closing

In the same web **Settings** dialog, **Allow staff to move cash to the safe when closing** lets Staff move some or all cash to the safe when they close a drawer. It is off by default; without it, Staff keep all cash in the drawer when closing.

## Turn tracking off or delete a drawer

To turn tracking off, count and close every drawer and finish any saved cash exchange first. Then select **Disable tracking** in the web **Settings** dialog, or tap **Tracking: on** in the mobile app and confirm. Cash history and reports are kept.

To delete a drawer, it must be closed and empty. Close it with **Move all cash to safe**, then select **Drawer options** and **Delete this drawer** in the web app, or **Delete drawer** in the mobile app. Its history is kept.

## Platform and market notes

Cash drawers work in the shop's currency, pounds or euros:

* **Great Britain:** coins from 1p to £2 and notes from £5 to £50.
* **Germany:** coins from 1 cent to €2 and notes from €5 to €500.

In Germany, the web app may show **Close the earlier fiscal period before opening this drawer** when cash payments from before drawer tracking cannot be assigned to one drawer. The Owner closes the current fiscal period in **Settings → Fiscal compliance** (**Open fiscal closing**). Then retry the opening; your count stays on the page.

## Troubleshooting

If **Enable tracking** is unavailable, open at least one drawer first. If enabling is refused, finish any saved cash exchange first. In Germany, wait until earlier cash payments are fiscally recorded, then try again.

If turning tracking off is refused, check that every drawer shows **Closed** with nothing still waiting.

Staff do not see **New drawer** or the tracking switch; the mobile app asks them to have a manager open a drawer and turn tracking on.
