Use terminal mode when a phone or tablet should show the customer a payment screen. Another device can send a payment to it during checkout. Turning on POS makes the device available for selection; entering terminal mode prepares its customer-facing screen.

Who can do this?

Owners, Managers, and Staff can enable POS and enter terminal mode on their own registered mobile device. Owners and Managers can also enable POS for other devices in the shop’s device list.

Where

On the receiving device, open Profile settings → This device in the mobile app. Turn on POS mode, then open Terminal mode.

Prepare the terminal

  1. Check the shop and device name, and keep the app connected.
  2. Open Terminal mode and read the device-locking guidance.
  3. On first setup, create a six-digit terminal PIN and enter it again to confirm. If the entries differ, start again with the PIN you want to use.
  4. Confirm Enter terminal mode.
  5. Follow the displayed device-locking guidance before handing the screen to customers.
Later entries skip guidance already completed and PIN creation when a PIN is already saved on the device. Make sure the team knows the existing terminal PIN before using the screen. Terminal mode hides staff screens inside Tapp, but does not prevent leaving the app through the phone’s home controls. The setup explains Guided Access on iOS and screen pinning on Android. Use the guidance shown for your device.

Send and finish a payment

The waiting screen shows the shop name and Tapp logo. It does not start a payment by itself. From checkout on another device, choose the option to send payment to another device and select the prepared terminal. Terminal mode supports eligible Tap to Pay and QR Code payments. If no method was selected on the sending device, choose an available method on the terminal. A tip step may appear before payment starts. If the screen asks for a member of staff, check the order and connection before continuing. Follow the payment status on both screens before attempting another collection. A success or failure result returns to the waiting screen after about five seconds. The terminal can also return there after about 90 seconds without activity on its screen, including while a guest is using their own phone to pay. Returning to the waiting screen is not proof of payment or cancellation. Check the order’s payment status before sending it again. To return to staff screens, tap Exit terminal mode and enter the terminal PIN. You can leave the method or tip screen before payment starts; this does not cancel the order. Once payment starts, a correct PIN does not cancel it. Wait for its result before exiting. If the payment finished on another device but this screen still says it is in progress, check the connection and try the exit PIN again. Tapp checks the saved payment status before allowing the screen to close. If that check cannot complete, exit can remain blocked. Do not collect the payment again merely to leave terminal mode.

Platform and market notes

The workflow applies in both supported markets. Available payment methods depend on the shop’s settings and the receiving device’s capabilities. Enabling terminal mode does not add Tap to Pay support to unsupported hardware.

Troubleshooting

If the QR code never appears or the screen goes blank after payment, check the order on the sending device. A spinner can hide a preparation error. Confirm the payment status before retrying. If the device is missing, check its POS setting, shop, and connection. If it is busy, inspect the existing payment before sending another. The PIN panel closes after about ten seconds without PIN activity; tap the exit icon again to reopen it. If PIN entry is temporarily locked, wait for the displayed countdown. Restarting the app does not reset that wait. Ask Tapp support for help if you cannot regain access.
