Organize your menu into categories so your team and guests can find the right items. You can rename a category or change its guest visibility without deleting the items inside it.

Who can do this?

Owners and Managers can manage categories. Staff can view categories but cannot create, rename or delete them.

Where to do it

In the web app, open Menu and choose Manage categories.

Create or rename a category

  1. Enter a category name in the add field.
  2. Select Add category and check that the category appears. A blank name cannot be saved.
  3. To rename a category, select its edit action.
  4. Enter the new name and save it, or cancel to keep the previous name.
  5. Return to Menu and check the category labels.
Use a clear name that helps your team recognize the items inside. A category is a way to group items; each item keeps its own price and tax choice.

Set guest visibility

Use the category’s visibility switch to show or hide the whole category on the guest ordering page. Hiding it does not delete its items or necessarily prevent your team from selling them. An item’s own guest-visibility setting also applies. Turning a category on does not make an individually hidden item visible. Check both settings if an item does not appear to guests.

Delete a category

  1. Move any items you want to keep into another category first.
  2. Select the category’s delete action.
  3. Wait for the item check to finish. Read the confirmation and compare its item count with the category you just reviewed.
  4. Confirm only when you want to delete the category and those items.
If only one category remains, its delete button is hidden. Create another category first if you need to move items or replace the remaining category. Deleting a category also deletes its contained menu items. For temporary online changes, use visibility instead.

Platform notes

These instructions describe the web app. Refresh any already-open menu in the mobile app or guest ordering page when checking the result of a change. In the mobile app, choose Products from the shop screen, then Add Category. Enter a name and select Create new category. Wait for the saved category to appear. If saving fails, check the category list before entering it again. On Android, Back closes the category panel before leaving the screen. Open a category in the mobile app to edit its name with the pencil, then select the tick to save. Use Done to return. The bin opens a deletion confirmation, including for the last category, but does not show an item count. Check and move any items you want to keep before confirming; deleting the category also deletes its items. If deletion fails, check the category again before retrying.

Market notes

The category controls work the same way in Great Britain and Germany. They do not choose or recalculate an item’s VAT for you.

Troubleshooting

If the deletion message calls a category empty when you expect items, cancel and check the category itself before continuing. If a change fails, reopen the category list and check its current state before retrying. Another team member may have edited it. Before deletion, check the displayed item count and move anything that should remain available.
